Avios Points Calculator

Two questions come up for anyone holding Avios points: what are they worth, and how many do I need? This page answers both. Below you will find what Avios convert to in pounds at realistic redemption rates, how many points each British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways route costs by cabin, and how to book a flight with Avios once you know the number. If what you want is to see which dates actually have seats, that is the British Airways reward flight finder.

What Are Avios Reward Flights?

Avios is the points currency shared by British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus and Qatar Airways Privilege Club. You earn Avios by flying, using credit cards, or transferring from bank rewards programs like American Express Membership Rewards.

Redeeming Avios for award flights (also called reward flights) is how you fly Business or First Class for a fraction of the cash price. The key challenge is finding when award seats are actually available — airlines release limited inventory and it disappears fast.

MileSeat solves this by showing you a full-year calendar of Avios seat availability across BA, Iberia and Qatar Airways — so you can spot open dates at a glance instead of checking day by day.

How much are Avios worth?

There is no fixed exchange rate. A point is worth the cash fare of the seat you redeem it for, minus the taxes and charges you still pay, divided by the points you spend. That is why the same balance is worth several times more in Club World than in Economy: the cash alternative in Economy is cheap enough that the points buy very little. The figures below use roughly 1.0p to 1.5p per Avios, the range most British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways redemptions land in.

AviosAt 1.0pAt 1.5pTypically reaches
10,000£100£150A short-haul Reward Flight Saver hop
20,000£200£300One-way Economy within Europe, return off-peak
30,000£300£450One-way Economy, London to the US East Coast
50,000£500£750One-way Club World off-peak on shorter transatlantic routes
75,000£750£1,125One-way Club World on most long-haul routes
100,000£1,000£1,500Approaching one-way First on a peak date

Taxes and carrier charges are paid in cash on top of the points, and on British Airways long-haul out of London they are the highest of any Avios airline. A valuation that leaves them out overstates what the points are worth.

One-way points for the routes MileSeat tracks across the three Avios airlines. Off-peak dates price below these figures and peak dates above them, so read them as the middle of a range rather than a fixed price.

How to book a flight with Avios

Knowing the number is the easy half. Points can only be spent on dates where a reward seat exists, and on the routes people actually want those dates are the constraint — not the balance. The order matters:

  1. Find the dates before you fix the trip. Availability is clustered, not evenly spread. A week either side of your ideal departure often changes which cabin you can afford.
  2. Add the charges to that figure. Taxes and carrier charges are paid in cash and are not small on British Airways long-haul. Departing on Iberia or Qatar Airways with the same Avios balance is frequently cheaper for the same journey.
  3. Top up only what the booking needs. Avios transfer in from several UK credit card and hotel programmes, usually within a day or two. Transfers are one-way, so move the balance after you have found the seat, not before.
  4. Book with the airline that operates the flight. One Avios balance works across British Airways, Iberia and Qatar Airways, but you book on the operating carrier's own site, and each holds its own award inventory.

If your dates are full today, an alert beats checking repeatedly. Most Avios seats on busy routes are cancellations, and they are taken within hours of appearing.

British Airways Avios, Iberia Avios and Qatar Avios — one balance, three airlines

BA Avios, Iberia Plus and Qatar Airways Privilege Club all draw on the same currency, and the balance moves between them. Which programme you book through changes both the number you spend and the cash you pay: the same journey can be materially cheaper on Iberia or Qatar metal than on British Airways, whose carrier charges are the highest of the three.

Where the balance comes from: earning Avios

Large balances are rarely flown for. Flying earns the fewest points of any route in, and most people redeeming for Club World built the balance somewhere else. Four sources account for nearly all of it:

  • Credit card transfers. Amex Membership Rewards, HSBC Premier and Marriott Bonvoy all move into Avios, generally at 1:1 and within a day or two. This is the fastest way to close a shortfall before a booking.
  • Co-brand card spend and sign-up bonuses. A single bonus can exceed a year of flying, which is why balances tend to jump rather than accumulate.
  • Flying and tier status. Earned across British Airways, Iberia, Qatar Airways and oneworld partners, scaled by fare class rather than distance alone.
  • Shopping, hotels and everyday spend. Small individually, but each transaction resets the inactivity clock that governs expiry.

Transfers cannot be reversed, so the sensible order is to find a date with a seat, price it, and only then move the balance across.

Avios Reward Flights — FAQs

How much is an Avios point worth?
Between roughly 1.0p and 1.5p, depending entirely on the redemption. There is no fixed rate: an Avios is worth the cash fare of the seat you take, minus the taxes and charges you still pay, divided by the points you spend. That arithmetic is why the same balance is worth far more in Club World than in Economy, where the cash fare is low enough that the points buy very little.
How much are British Airways points worth in pounds?
British Airways points are Avios, so the same 1.0p to 1.5p range applies. A 30,000 Avios balance is worth roughly £300 to £450 of travel — but only if you redeem it well. The same 30,000 spent on a cheap Economy fare might return under £150 of value, while spent on a long-haul Club World seat it can go considerably further.
How many Avios do I need for a flight?
It depends on distance, cabin and date. The chart above shows one-way figures for the routes MileSeat tracks: London to New York is around 13,000 Avios in Economy and 40,000 in Club World, while London to Tokyo is 30,000 and 60,000. Off-peak dates price below those numbers and peak dates above, so the same route can differ substantially between two dates in the same month.
What is Avios, and which airlines use it?
Avios is the points currency shared by British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Airways Privilege Club and Aer Lingus AerClub. One balance works across all of them, and it can also be spent on oneworld partners including American Airlines, Cathay Pacific and Finnair. Which programme you book through matters: the same journey can cost different amounts of Avios and very different taxes.
Do I pay taxes and fees on top of Avios?
Yes, in cash, and on British Airways they are the highest of any Avios airline. Long-haul premium cabins departing London can carry several hundred pounds per person in carrier charges. Reward Flight Saver caps them on shorter routes. Booking the same journey through Iberia or Qatar Airways, using the same Avios balance, is often materially cheaper.
How do I book a flight with Avios?
Find a date with a reward seat first, check the points cost and the cash charges, top up your balance from a transfer partner if you are short, then book on the site of the airline operating the flight. Availability rather than the balance is what usually blocks a booking, so working backwards from the dates that have seats saves a great deal of wasted searching.
Is there an Avios calculator that shows real prices?
The tables on this page are built from the redemption figures MileSeat records on real routes rather than a published chart, so they reflect what they actually cost to use. For a live figure on specific dates, the reward flight finder shows the Avios price alongside availability for every day of the year.
Do Avios expire?
Avios expire after a period of account inactivity rather than on a fixed date from when they were earned. Any qualifying activity — earning or spending, including small partner transactions — resets the clock, so an account used occasionally keeps its balance.
Is it worth using Avios for Economy?
Usually only when the cash fare is unusually high, or on short-haul where Reward Flight Saver caps the charges. On long-haul Economy the maths is generally poor: the cash alternative is cheap and you still pay the taxes. Avios return the most value in Club World and First, which is also where availability is hardest — the reason a full-year view matters most in premium cabins.
Can I spend Avios on partner airlines?
Yes. Partner redemptions on American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines and other oneworld carriers are available, and often carry lower carrier charges than British Airways metal. Partner award inventory is a separate pool from British Airways' own and is loaded on the partner's schedule, so it has to be checked separately.
