How to Transfer Credit Card Points to Airlines (and Why It Matters)
American Express, Chase, Capital One, and others all let you move points to airline loyalty programmes. Here's how transfers work and which pairings give the best value.
Credit card points are often more flexible than airline miles — but their real power comes from transferring them to the right loyalty programme at the right moment. Understanding how this works is one of the highest-value things a points traveller can learn.
How Point Transfers Work
Most premium credit cards — American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, Citi ThankYou Points — allow you to move points to airline loyalty programmes. The transfer is one-way and usually takes between instant and 48 hours depending on the programme.
Transfer ratios are typically 1:1, meaning 1 credit card point becomes 1 airline mile. Some programmes offer bonuses during promotional periods.
Which Programmes Accept Transfers?
**American Express Membership Rewards** transfers to: British Airways (Avios), Air France-KLM (Flying Blue), Virgin Atlantic (Virgin Points), Cathay Pacific (Asia Miles), Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), and others.
**Chase Ultimate Rewards** transfers to: United (MileagePlus), British Airways (Avios), Air France-KLM (Flying Blue), Virgin Atlantic (Virgin Points), Singapore Airlines (KrisFlyer), and others.
**Capital One Miles** transfers to: Air France-KLM (Flying Blue), Avianca (LifeMiles), Turkish Airlines (Miles&Smiles), and others.
When to Transfer
Transfer only when you have a confirmed booking in mind. Points sitting in a credit card account have no expiry; once transferred to an airline programme, they may expire after 12–36 months of inactivity depending on the programme. Never transfer speculatively.
The Sweet Spot Strategy
The most effective approach: identify the award you want using MileSeat, confirm availability exists on your dates, then transfer the exact number of points needed. Some travellers keep a small buffer of 5,000–10,000 points across two or three programmes ready to top up when a good seat appears.
Taxes and Fees Still Apply
Transferring points covers the award cost, not the carrier-imposed surcharges and taxes. British Airways awards on BA metal carry significant surcharges; Iberia and Virgin Atlantic tend to be lower. Factor in the total out-of-pocket cost before deciding which programme to transfer to.
